Project Updates: early 2015

North Olympic Salmon Coalition staff were onsite at 3 Crabs observing flood conditions during the recent heavy rain events, and passing information on to project engineers.  Check out the photos!

As we enter 2015, engineers are continuing their design work on the 3 Crabs Restoration Project, and Salmon Coalition staff have begun writing project permit applications.

Engineers need additional  information about soils in the location of the new road bed in order to satisfy county requirements for road design. There will be equipment on the Dungeness Habitat property in early February to complete this work.

Construction dates have been shifted to Summer 2016, provided the remaining engineering and permitting goes smoothly.

3 Crabs Demolition Cleanup

Four students from Sequim High School and Larry Montague from NOSC took part in a clean-up effort to clear the debris left over from the Three Crabs Restaurant demolition. The main goal of our team was to pick up debris that could blow into Meadowbrook Creek and Dungeness Bay.  Hazardous materials we picked up included insulation, foam, plastic, particle board, and other light materials. The point was to benefit not only salmon, but people and birds as well. We don't want birds to eat Styrofoam during the winter!  There were five of us working hard in the cold, snowy weather. It was tedious work picking up the smallest bits of material! In the end, there were 5 trash bags filled. We left feeling proud and accomplished to know we were helping keep the wildlife safe by keeping the pollutants out of the water.

The students from Sequim High School are taking a Natural Resources class through the North Olympic Skills Center, volunteering at the 3 Crabs site for part of their culminating projects. Here's a link to their class blog:
